ground surface just in front of the barn

I am wondering if there is an opinion on the best ground surface for the few feet (up to 10 feet or so) in front of the barn - just before the pasture starts. I am constructing a barn and will have some gravel at least for a few inches next the the barn door to absorb the water dripping from the barn roof; but wonder what is best for the next few feet before the pasture starts. Seems like dirt could be muddy for a few weeks of the spring and I wonder if this is a problem for the llamas' feet. Is this a realistic concern? Should there be some other surface such as gravel or is this not necessary? It seems unlikely that we will ever get the pasture to start right next to the barn and so need to plan something. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.
