Hi all! I have learned so much from your posts and comments that I felt like posting about my experience today would be worthwhile to someone.
We have had our 3 camelids about 6 months and have not worked on the halter with them because they have had a lot of bad experience with them and we wanted to give them a break and build some trust before getting them haltered. I am not even sure if one of them had ever worn a halter, but she had had some rough handling for sure.
Anyway, for the last few months we have worked on balance and the catch rope technique described in Marty's book. We have made a lot of progress and had a lot of fun doing it.
Today was the day we tried to actually attach the halters to them instead of just holding up a loop or halter near thier head to get them used to the idea. Well, it was kind of amazing how easy it was to put them on each of them and how easy it was to handle them afterwards.
I have the halters on them now and I was planning on leaving them on to get used to them, but then I read today in the newsletter never to leave them on overnight! So, what shall I do? It's too dark tonight for me to begin work with them again to take halters off. We don't have an indoor pen. Do you think they will be Ok? And, why is it important to take them off at night?
