The New Zephyr Halter

new halter size

We are very proud of the versatility, safety and workmanship of the Zephyr Halter, which continually gets rave reviews. However, based on customer requests for a wider range of fit, we are moving from a two–size system to a three–size system. Rest assured, the new sizing is only going to improve the utility and versatility of the Zephyr Halter.

ORDER NOW

With the three–size system the Zephyr Halter will fit all llamas or alpacas without the need for special orders to accommodate extra large or extra small. The old sizing system had two sizes (Small: fits from 4–5 months to one year, and Medium/Large: fits from one year to adult). The following is a guide for the new three–size system.

New Sizes

A huge amount of variability exists between animals of the same species and age, therefore, so sizing guidelines are approximate. There is also a deliberate overlap between the sizes. If you own one of each size halter of the appropriate species, you can fit any alpaca or llama safely and comfortably.

Following are some guidelines to help you transition from the old system to the new one:

Fitting The Zephyr Halter

Fitting your new halter is no different from the old style and still critical for safety, comfort & effectiveness.

  1. Open the noseband completely. Always open the noseband. It is NOT a good idea to pre–fit halters or assign a halter to a particular animal. Pre–fitting the halter makes it more likely to get stuck on the nose before sliding far enough up on the nose bone.
  2. Put the halter on and snug up the crown piece. Make sure that the crown piece is tight enough that if you pull forward on the nose band, it will not slip off the boney part of the nose. This is going to be very snug (almost tight) for animals wearing the small halter and can be slightly looser for animals wearing the medium or large halter.
  3. Snug up the noseband until the noseband just contacts the animal. The noseband should not inhibit the animal's ability to chew. You should be able to slide a finger inside the noseband for small and medium halters and two fingers for animals wearing large halters.
